Course Curriculum

1. Linux Architecture, Kernel Fundamentals & Terminal Mastery

  • Linux operating system architecture: User space vs Kernel space, system calls (syscalls), and shell interfaces
  • Enterprise Linux distributions: Debian/Ubuntu vs RHEL/Rocky/CentOS layouts, package management (APT, DNF/RPM)
  • Filesystem Hierarchy Standard (FHS): Deep dive into /proc, /sys, /etc, /var, /dev, and /run pseudo-filesystems
  • Advanced file operations, standard POSIX permissions (chmod, chown), Access Control Lists (getfacl, setfacl), and Special Bits (SUID, SGID, Sticky Bit)

2. Production Text Processing & Stream Editing (Grep, Sed, Awk)

  • Regular expressions (Regex): Basic vs Extended regex, character classes, anchors, quantifiers, and lookaheads
  • Advanced grep: Multi-file search, recursive traversal, context lines (-A, -B, -C), and byte offsets
  • Stream Editor (sed): Pattern space vs hold space, in-place editing (-i), line addressing, and complex delimiter substitution (s|old|new|g)
  • Awk programming language: Pattern-action blocks, built-in variables (NR, NF, FS, OFS), associative arrays, and formatted multi-gigabyte log parsing
  • High-throughput log analysis: Benchmarking LC_ALL=C byte-sorting and parsing multi-gigabyte server logs in seconds

3. Advanced Bash Shell Scripting & Defensive Automation

  • Defensive scripting standards: Enforcing strict error handling with 'set -euo pipefail'
  • Variable scoping & parameter expansion: Default value assignments (${var:-default}), substring slicing, and regex validation
  • Positional parameters & word splitting: Mastering "$@" vs "$*", null-byte separators, and while-read file streaming
  • Signal handling & automated cleanup: Intercepting SIGINT/SIGTERM/EXIT with trap to clean temp directories and locks
  • Atomic process locking: Implementing robust cron concurrency mutexes using kernel-level flock

4. Process Management, Kernel Memory & Performance Diagnostics

  • Process lifecycles: Fork and execve system calls, process priority (nice, renice), and states (Runnable, Uninterruptible Sleep D-state, Zombie)
  • Diagnosing system load: Understanding Load Average vs CPU utilization, troubleshooting disk I/O wait with iostat and pidstat
  • Memory management: Virtual memory overcommit, swap paging, and the Linux Out-Of-Memory (OOM) Killer (/proc/pid/oom_score_adj)
  • File descriptor limits: Diagnosing 'Too many open files' crashes using lsof, ulimit, and system-wide /proc/sys/fs/file-max configurations

5. Systemd Daemons, Timers & Storage Management (LVM)

  • Systemd architecture: Targets, runlevels, unit types, and analyzing boot bottlenecks with systemd-analyze
  • Custom service units: Writing production .service files with restart policies, sandboxing, and environment configurations
  • Systemd timers: Replacing legacy cron with monotonic and calendar-based systemd timers for microsecond-accurate task automation
  • Journald logging: Querying, filtering by priority/PID, and rotating system logs using journalctl
  • Logical Volume Management (LVM): Physical Volumes (PV), Volume Groups (VG), Logical Volumes (LV), dynamic disk resizing, and XFS/ext4 filesystems

6. Networking, Server Hardening & Infrastructure Automation

  • Network socket analysis: Querying open listening ports and active sockets using modern 'ss -tulpn' and lsof
  • Packet capture & network routing: Diagnosing network drops with tcpdump, traceroute, and ip route tables
  • Enterprise SSH hardening: Ed25519 elliptic-curve keys, disabling root password login, configuring bastion jump hosts, and strict permissions
  • Firewall & security policies: Managing dynamic packet filtering with firewalld zones, rich rules, and SELinux enforcement (enforcing/permissive, restorecon)
  • Capstone Project: Enterprise Automated Server Hardening, Resource Monitoring & Incident Telemetry Bash Toolchain
